Wall-Mounted vs. Floor-Based Closet Systems: Which Is Right for You?

It's one of the first questions people ask when they start a custom closet: should it hang off the wall, or sit on the floor? Here's the honest answer up front — neither one is better. Both are fully custom, built from the same materials to the same quality. The right choice comes down to the look you love and a few practical details about your room.

Wall-mounted (floating) systems

A wall-mounted (floating) system — everything hangs off the wall and the floor stays open underneath.

In a wall-mounted system, the cabinets, shelves and hanging rods are all anchored to the wall, so the floor stays open beneath them. People love it for the light, modern "floating" look — it makes a room feel a little bigger and airier, and it's easy to vacuum or mop right under. When it's installed properly into the studs, it easily carries everyday clothing, shoes and storage.

Floor-based (floor-standing) systems

A floor-based (floor-standing) system — cabinetry rests on the floor with a toe kick, like built-in furniture.

A floor-based system sits directly on the floor with a toe-kick base, like fine built-in furniture. People choose it for the substantial, grounded, built-in feel. Because the weight goes straight down into the floor, it's a natural pick for unusually heavy loads or when a wall's condition (old plaster, for example) makes anchoring less ideal.

The honest truth: neither is "better"

Here's what a lot of companies won't tell you plainly: there's no functional winner. Both are built from the same 3/4-inch furniture board, use the same soft-close hardware, are engineered to the inch for your space, and carry the same guarantee. Your clothes don't know the difference. So the decision isn't about quality or durability — it's about what you like and what suits your room.

You can't pick "wrong." Both are custom, both are built to last — it's a style and room-fit choice, not a performance one.

How to choose — a few honest pointers

  • Go with the look you love. Prefer a clean, modern, floating feel? Wall-mounted. Prefer a solid, furniture-like, built-in feel? Floor-based. Genuinely, this is the biggest factor.
  • Think about your flooring. Over beautiful hardwood or tile, a wall-mounted system shows off the floor and is a breeze to clean under. If the room is carpeted, a wall-mounted (floating) system is usually the smarter choice — it keeps the carpet clear, doesn't rest heavy cabinetry on a soft surface, and makes future carpet replacement easy. Both can be installed on either floor; on carpet we simply lean floating.
  • Consider the load. For a normal closet, both are plenty strong. If you're planning something exceptionally heavy, floor-based sends that weight straight to the floor.
  • Mind the walls. Solid, stud-backed walls are perfect for wall-mounted. Tricky or older walls? Floor-based doesn't depend on them.
  • Mix and match. You don't have to pick just one — we can combine a floor-based drawer tower with floating hanging sections in the same closet.
